Zimbabwe Aims To Leverage Home Advantage Against India In T20I Clash
Zimbabwe spinner Wellington Masakadza has warned the Shubman Gill-led Indian team not to underestimate the home side after their surprising victory in the first T20I in Harare. He emphasised that Zimbabwe will leverage their home conditions to secure a win in the five-match series.
India, fresh off their T20 World Cup triumph with a different squad, faced an unexpected 13-run defeat against Zimbabwe. Despite restricting Zimbabwe to 115 for nine, India was bowled out for 102 in 19.5 overs, marking their first T20I loss of 2024 and their first defeat against Zimbabwe in eight years.

Masakadza, who took 1/15 in three overs, stated: "We are trying to use our own conditions as much as we can against this Indian side. It's a second-string Indian side, but there are a lot of good players in there. So, we are looking forward to this series," he said during an interview with PTI Videos facilitated by Sony Sports Network.
He added that they had specific plans which needed to work effectively and reiterated the importance of using home conditions to their advantage. The left-arm spinner also mentioned targeting key Indian players like Shubman Gill and Riyan Parag.
Harare's winter season poses additional challenges for batters due to slow pitches with some turn and seam movement. Masakadza noted that these conditions could trouble the Indian batters significantly. "It's winter here and at times it's a bit difficult for batters as the pitch is slowish, with a bit of turn. The seam is always a very big challenge in Harare during winter," he explained.
Masakadza also highlighted the quality of India's spinners, Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar, acknowledging the challenge they present. "They're very good spinners. Bishnoi has just had a very good tournament in the IPL and also Sundar," he said.
A New Chapter for Zimbabwe Cricket
The series holds significant importance for Zimbabwe cricket, which has struggled over recent years. Masakadza believes that winning the series would be a major boost for the team and its future prospects. "This series will mean a lot to us. If we manage to win the series, it will be a very big thing in our future," he stated.
The 30-year-old spinner expressed optimism about Zimbabwe's new coaching staff and their plans moving forward. He sees this series as an opportunity to start afresh and make significant strides.
Aspirations Beyond National Team
Masakadza also shared his aspirations of playing in leagues like the IPL, following in the footsteps of his skipper Sikandar Raza. Pakistan-born Raza played for Punjab Kings this IPL season, scoring 43 runs in two games and was named 'Player of the Match' on Saturday for his three wickets and 17 runs performance.
"Definitely, it's always a good thing to go out there and play in those leagues. I will look to take some wickets in this series. That can be good for me to get a gig (IPL contract)," Masakadza said.
The upcoming matches will be crucial for both teams as they navigate through this competitive series under challenging conditions.
