Zimbabwe Eyes Upset Against India With Sikandar Raza At The Helm: Coach Sammons
Sikandar Raza's extensive experience in various T20 leagues will be invaluable for Zimbabwe's relatively inexperienced team as they face a skilled Indian side filled with IPL talent. Head coach Justin Sammons shared his thoughts ahead of the five-match series starting on July 6.
"We are fortunate to have Sikandar Raza leading the team. His experience is crucial, and we want him to lead by example. He has been excellent in the dressing room, mentoring players. We expect his bat and bowling to make a significant impact," Sammons said in an exclusive interview from Harare.

India often rests its top players during summer tours to Africa, but this time, three members of the T20 World Cup-winning squad—Shivam Dube, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sanju Samson—will join from the third game. Additionally, all four standbys, including captain Shubman Gill, are part of the squad.
Sammons emphasised focusing on future goals rather than past events. "I don't want to dwell on what's happened in the past. We have a clear vision for where this team wants to go in the next two or three years," he stated.
The coach aims to build a strong team over the next two years by improving players' game awareness and skills. "We're encouraging players to continually up-skill and improve. They know they'll be taken out of their comfort zones," he added.
Praise for Shubman Gill
Sammons praised young India skipper Shubman Gill for his work ethic and professionalism. "Shubman is a superb cricketer. I first saw him during a Test series against India in December 2021. Although he didn't play then, his dedication in the nets was impressive," Sammons recalled.
"His record speaks for itself," Sammons noted, highlighting Gill's golden period across formats over the past 18 months.
Exciting Prospects: Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube
The coach also spoke highly of southpaws Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube. "They're exciting and dangerous players with proven records. It's an amazing opportunity for us," he said.
"As youngsters growing up, you always dream of playing against the best in the world," Sammons added, reflecting on their potential impact.
Riyan Parag: A Rising Star
Sammons also praised newcomer Riyan Parag for his performance in the IPL. "Riyan Parag is dangerous and had a great IPL season. He's another exciting prospect for India," he said.
"It's another opportunity for our guys to test themselves against the best," Sammons concluded.
