Zak Crawley Hits 61 Not Out As England Eye Consolation Victory In Dharamsala
Zak Crawley's resilience at the crease was on full display as he notched an unbeaten fifty for England in their fifth Test against India in Dharamsala. The opening day saw England reach 100 for two at lunch, with Crawley leading the charge with 61 not out. This performance comes as England seeks a consolation victory, trailing behind India's commanding 3-1 lead in the five-match series.
The partnership between Crawley and Ben Duckett was particularly noteworthy, amassing 64 runs for the opening wicket. Despite facing a challenging spell from Indian seamers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, who exploited the conditions to test the English batsmen thoroughly, both managed to keep their wickets intact. However, it was left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav who broke through, claiming the wickets of Duckett for 27 and Ollie Pope for 11, the latter falling just before the session ended.

England's decision to bat first came after captain Ben Stokes assessed the pitch to be favorable. The cooler conditions in Dharamsala initially assisted India's seamers, with Bumrah delivering an exceptional spell that saw him beating the bat on multiple occasions without securing a wicket. His figures of 7-1-24-0, however, did not reflect the quality of his performance.
Crawley's innings was marked by his adeptness on both the back and front foot, showcasing several impressive drives through the covers. His partnership with Duckett marked their fifth 50-stand of the series, demonstrating a solid opening combination for England. Despite a close lbw call when Crawley was on 29, which was upheld in favor of the batsman after brushing leg stump, he continued to build his innings effectively.
Introduced into the attack during the 15th over on his 100th Test match, Ravichandran Ashwin was immediately put under pressure by Duckett's paddle sweep. However, Duckett's dismissal came at the hands of Kuldeep Yadav, setting up a catch for Shubman Gill. Crawley then reached his fifty with a drive off Kuldeep and continued to dominate Ashwin, including hitting him for a six.
The session concluded with Pope attempting to advance down the wicket to Kuldeep, only to be stumped by Dhruv Jurel off a googly. This marked a significant moment just before lunch, leaving England at 100 for two.
With England down to 13 players due to Ollie Robinson being back at the team hotel and Shoaib Bashir recovering from an upset stomach, assistant coaches Marcus Trescothick and Paul Collingwood were listed among the substitute fielders. The match continues to unfold as England aims to salvage pride in what has been a challenging series against a dominant Indian side.
