Zaheer Khan Eyed For Mentor And Bowling Coach Role At Lucknow Super Giants
Zaheer Khan is being considered for a mentor role at the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). If talks succeed, the former India pacer could also share his expertise with the team bowlers.
The discussions follow Morne Morkel's appointment as the new bowling coach of the Indian cricket team. Morkel, a former South Africa quick, had been LSG's bowling coach since its inception in 2022. His appointment came after recommendations from Gautam Gambhir, who is now LSG's head coach and was previously their mentor.

Zaheer Khan has extensive coaching experience in the IPL. He was appointed as the Global Head of Cricket Development at Mumbai Indians in September 2022 after serving as a key member of their coaching unit for many years. If he joins LSG, he will work alongside head coach Justin Langer and a strong team of coaches, including Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes.
Previously, Zaheer was also a contender to become India's bowling coach under Gambhir's new setup following Rahul Dravid's departure. However, that position went to Gambhir's former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) teammate Morkel. Gambhir and Morkel had also worked together at LSG for two years.
Currently, Zaheer and LSG are in talks for a potential partnership. Cricbuzz reported on Monday (August 19) that Zaheer would be a key figure in the Lucknow coaching setup if an agreement is reached.
Zaheer Khan played 92 Test matches for India, taking 311 wickets at an average of 32.95. He also featured in 200 ODIs, claiming 282 wickets. In T20Is, he picked up 17 wickets in as many matches. In the IPL, Zaheer represented Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Delhi Capitals (DC), securing 102 wickets in 100 matches.
If appointed by LSG, Zaheer will bring his vast experience to the team’s coaching staff. This move could significantly benefit LSG's bowlers and overall team performance.
The potential addition of Zaheer Khan to LSG’s coaching staff highlights the franchise’s commitment to strengthening its support system with experienced professionals.
This development marks another chapter in Zaheer Khan’s illustrious career both as a player and coach within Indian cricket.
