Zaheer Khan, Lakshmipathy Balaji Contend For India's Bowling Coach Role

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now focusing on selecting the national team's next bowling coach. This follows the recent appointment of Gautam Gambhir as India's head coach. According to ANI, former Indian seamers Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji are leading candidates for the role.

Zaheer Khan has had a remarkable career with the Indian cricket team. He has taken 311 wickets in 92 Test matches and 610 wickets across 309 international matches in all formats. Widely regarded as one of the greatest left-arm pacers, Zaheer's extensive experience and tactical knowledge make him a strong contender for the position.

Race for India's Bowling Coach

Lakshmipathy Balaji, another notable former cricketer, has also made significant contributions to Indian cricket. He has represented India in eight Test matches, securing 27 wickets at an average of 37.18. In One Day Internationals (ODIs), Balaji has claimed 34 wickets in 30 matches, with an average of 39.52.

Balaji's contributions extend beyond his playing career; he has also served as a coach in various capacities. His experience both on and off the field adds to his credentials for the bowling coach role. The BCCI is keen to build a robust support staff to steer Indian cricket forward.

The search for a new bowling coach follows the end of Paras Mhambrey's term. With Gautam Gambhir now appointed as head coach, the BCCI aims to strengthen its coaching staff further.

Gambhir's Appointment Announced by Jay Shah

Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, officially announced Gambhir's appointment on his X account. Shah expressed confidence in Gambhir's ability to lead the team, highlighting his extensive experience and clear vision for Team India as key factors in his appointment.

"It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr. @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward. His clear vision for #TeamIndia, coupled with his vast experience, positions him perfectly to take on this exciting and most sought-after coaching role. The @BCCI fully supports him as he embarks on this new journey," Shah wrote on X.

Recent Triumphs Under Dravid

The recent changes in coaching staff come after India's triumphant victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. They defeated South Africa by seven runs in the final, marking their first win in the tournament in 17 years. Rahul Dravid, the outgoing head coach, concluded his tenure on a high note with this significant achievement.

The BCCI continues its efforts to ensure that Indian cricket remains competitive on the global stage by appointing experienced individuals like Gambhir and considering seasoned professionals like Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji for crucial roles within its coaching staff.
