Yuzvendra Chahal's Strategic Move To Punjab Kings In IPL 2025 Mega Auction
Yuzvendra Chahal, a prominent leg-spinner from India, has made headlines by joining Punjab Kings (PBKS) for IPL 2025. He was acquired for an unprecedented Rs 18 crore during the mega auction held in Jeddah. This move makes him the most expensive Indian spinner in IPL history, surpassing his previous stint with Rajasthan Royals (RR).
Chahal's decision to enter the auction pool was strategic. Despite his impressive performances with RR, where he took 27, 21, and 18 wickets over the last three seasons, the franchise prioritised retaining younger players. Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal were retained for Rs 18 crore each, while Dhruv Jurel and Riyan Parag secured Rs 14 crore deals.

Chahal anticipated that RR would not match his market value of ₹18 crore. Opting out of retention allowed him to explore new opportunities and secure a lucrative contract. His decision was influenced by discussions with his coach Randhir Singh and family.
Despite RR captain Sanju Samson's efforts to retain him, Chahal had already decided to move on. Sources revealed that Samson personally reached out to persuade him to stay, but Chahal was firm in his choice.
The appointment of Rahul Dravid as RR's head coach also impacted Chahal's decision. Having been left out of India's playing XI during the T20 World Cup 2024 under Dravid's tenure, Chahal was uncertain about his role at RR. "There isn't any conflict between Chahal and Dravid," a source mentioned, "but the spinner wasn't confident about his role under Dravid's watch."
This uncertainty prompted Chahal to seek greener pastures. His move has proven beneficial as he joins PBKS under new head coach Ricky Ponting.
A New Chapter with Punjab Kings
At PBKS, Chahal will team up with Arshdeep Singh, Lockie Ferguson, Marco Jansen, and Harpreet Brar. This formidable bowling lineup adds depth and experience to the team. The franchise hopes Chahal's consistency will lead them to a successful IPL 2025 campaign.
Chahal shares the title of joint-most expensive Indian bowler in IPL history with Arshdeep Singh. Both players were acquired for Rs 18 crore after intense bidding wars at the auction.
Despite being on the fringes of India's T20I squad recently, Chahal aims for a national comeback with another strong IPL season. His acquisition by PBKS highlights his market value and determination to excel on cricket's biggest stage.
Chahal's impressive IPL record includes 205 wickets in 160 matches. His former team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) also pursued him at the auction, underscoring his value in T20 cricket.
