Yashasvi Jaiswal Breaks Gautam Gambhir's Long-Standing Record During Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Yashasvi Jaiswal, a young Indian opener, made history on Day 2 of the first Test against Australia in Perth. The 22-year-old surpassed Gautam Gambhir's 16-year-old record for the most runs by an Indian left-handed batter in a calendar year. Jaiswal achieved this feat in just his 15th match.

In 2008, Gambhir set the record with 1,134 runs at an average of 70.67, including six fifties and three centuries. Jaiswal, who has been in exceptional form throughout 2024, broke this record by scoring his 1,135th run during India's second innings. By the end of play, he had accumulated 1,156 runs at an average of 55.04.

Jaiswal Breaks Gambhir's Historic Record

This year has been remarkable for Jaiswal, featuring two double hundreds, three centuries, and seven half-centuries. His journey began with dominant performances against England, where he scored over 700 runs, including two double centuries. Despite a duck in Perth's first innings, he showed great composure in the second.

Jaiswal's run spree started with impressive performances against England earlier this year. He scored over 700 runs against them, including two double centuries. Although he was dismissed for a duck in Perth's first innings, he demonstrated resilience by scoring 42 off 88 balls in the second innings.

This contribution helped India extend their lead to 130 runs by tea. Currently, Jaiswal is the second-highest run-scorer in Tests for 2024, trailing only Joe Root from England who has amassed 1,338 runs.

Potential to Top the Charts

With several innings remaining in the ongoing series, Jaiswal has a strong chance to surpass Root and finish as the year's top scorer. India's head coach Gautam Gambhir praised Jaiswal's consistency and maturity.

"Yashasvi's ability to adapt to different conditions and perform under pressure sets him apart," Gambhir remarked. Since his debut against the West Indies in 2023, Jaiswal's rise has been rapid.

A Promising Career Ahead

Jaiswal announced himself with a stunning debut innings of 171 runs. In his career spanning just 15 Tests so far, the Mumbai batter has accumulated an impressive total of 1,445 runs at an average of 55.58. This includes two double-centuries and eight half-centuries.

The young cricketer’s achievements mark a promising start to what could be a stellar career ahead for him on the international stage.
