Yashasvi Jaiswal And KL Rahul Set Historic 172-Run Opening Partnership In Perth Test Against Australia
India's opening pair, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, showcased an outstanding performance on the second day of the first Test against Australia in Perth. Their partnership reached 172 runs without losing a wicket, marking a significant milestone in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
This achievement is notable as it is the first time since 2010 that a visiting team has achieved a 150+ opening stand in Australia. The last instance was by Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook with their 159-run partnership at Melbourne. Moreover, it's the first such feat outside an Ashes Test since Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth's 191-run stand in Sydney back in 1986.

The partnership between Jaiswal and Rahul is only the third instance in 14 years where an Indian opening pair has surpassed a century mark in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. Impressively, KL Rahul has been involved in all three instances.
- KL Rahul/Rohit Sharma – 126 at Lord's (2021)
- KL Rahul/Mayank Agarwal – 117 at Centurion (2021)
- KL Rahul/Yashasvi Jaiswal – 172* at Perth (2024)
Rahul continues to demonstrate his ability to anchor innings under challenging overseas conditions. Meanwhile, Jaiswal impressed with a composed innings of 90* off 193 balls.
Their partnership places them among elite Indian opening pairs achieving over 100 runs in Australia. Their stand of 172 runs surpassed Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan's record of 165 runs set in Melbourne in 1981. It now ranks just behind Gavaskar-Srikkanth's remarkable 191-run partnership at Sydney in 1986.
India dismissed Australia for just 104 runs in their first innings, thanks to Jasprit Bumrah's impressive figures of 5/30. This allowed India to start their second innings with a substantial lead. The partnership between Jaiswal and Rahul extended this lead to an imposing total of 218 runs.
As the match progresses, India aims to build on this strong foundation and set a formidable target for Australia. With Jaiswal and Rahul leading the charge, they are rewriting history at Perth.
