WTC 2023-25 Standings: England Maintains Position After Victory Over New Zealand In First Test

England and New Zealand have maintained their positions in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 standings following the first Test of their three-match series. This match was held at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on December 1.

New Zealand began Day 4 with a score of 155/6, leading England by four runs. The Kiwis added 99 more runs to their total, with Daryl Mitchell scoring an impressive 84. Nathan Smith contributed 21 runs, supported by other tailenders.

England Wins First Test Against New Zealand

Jacob Bethell made a remarkable debut for England, scoring an unbeaten fifty off just 37 balls. Brydon Carse's exceptional bowling performance, taking six wickets for 42 runs, helped England secure an eight-wicket victory over New Zealand.

Despite this win, England remains sixth in the WTC table with a point percentage of 43.75. They cannot qualify for the WTC Final at Lord's. Meanwhile, New Zealand holds onto fourth place with a point percentage of 50.00 but faces challenges in reaching the final.

The Kiwis aim to recover in the remaining Tests against England. However, their qualification for next year's final at Lord's is uncertain and depends on other results.

The top contenders for the WTC final - India, South Africa, and Australia - are set to play crucial matches soon. Australia will face India directly for a spot, while South Africa will compete against Sri Lanka before hosting Pakistan later this month.

West Indies and Bangladesh, both out of contention, will also play red-ball cricket in the Caribbean. Here is the schedule for December's WTC matches:
