Wriddhiman Saha Credits Sourav Ganguly For Bengal Cricket Return, Shifts Focus From IPL
Wriddhiman Saha has confirmed his return to Bengal cricket for the upcoming domestic season. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter had previously switched to Tripura due to a miscommunication with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). However, he has now decided to come back to his home state.
Accompanied by CAB president Snehasish Ganguly, Saha announced his comeback at a press conference held at Eden Gardens. He had recently participated in the inaugural Bengal Pro T20 league, which hinted at his return. The official confirmation came directly from Saha during the event.

Saha expressed his gratitude towards Sourav Ganguly, Snehasish Ganguly, and his wife for supporting his decision to return. "I left two years for Tripura. But credit to Sourav Ganguly, Snehasish Ganguly, my wife and others that I may represent Bengal team if I get a chance (chuckles). I will be looking forward to contribute to my team. I am working as a player now, and if CAB gives me an opportunity in any other role, I am always free for that. I dreamt of playing for Bengal and sacrificed a few jobs. My main goal was to represent Bengal and I am very happy to return from where it all started," Wriddhiman said in the press conference.
The veteran cricketer played a significant role in the first season of the Bengal Pro T20 league and is keen on seeing its continued success. He believes this league provides players with financial security and opportunities to represent the state if they perform well.
"The way Bengal Pro T20 league has started, it is very encouraging. The players are getting monetary security along with a chance to play, and if they play well, they may get a chance to represent the state. It [Bengal Pro T20] was poised to happen for a long time, but finally it has started. I hope it will be long lasting and give opportunities to players," he said.
Saha also played for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2024 but is not expected to be retained by them in the upcoming mega auction. Despite this uncertainty, he remains focused on contributing to Bengal cricket rather than prioritising IPL opportunities.
Prioritising Domestic Cricket
"I will only think about Mushtaq Ali after the Red Ball cricket. IPL is not my priority; if that had been my priority, I wouldn't have played Ranji Trophy in the last two years. Yes, white ball cricket will be in focus, but only after the longer format," Saha said when MyKhel asked him about any special preparation for the T20 domestic tournament.
Saha's return comes at a crucial time following former India player Manoj Tiway's retirement. His experience and skills are expected to significantly benefit Bengal cricket as they navigate this transition period.
It remains to be seen how Wriddhiman Saha, affectionately known as 'Papali' in Bengal cricket circles, will perform upon his return. His dedication and commitment suggest he will play an essential role in strengthening his home state's cricket team once again.
