T20 World Cup 2024: Will Yuzvendra Chahal Feature In Team India's Knockout Strategy?

Yuzvendra Chahal has been included in Team India's squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 after a solid Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Rajasthan Royals. However, the leg-spinner has yet to play in the group stage and Super Eights.

India's decision to select four spinners in their 15-member squad for the tournament in the USA and the Caribbean raised many eyebrows. Alongside Chahal, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav were chosen.

Chahal's Role in T20 WC 2024 Explored

Initially, conditions in the USA favoured pace bowlers, leading India to field only two spinners, Jadeja and Axar, due to their batting abilities. As the tournament moved to the Caribbean, where spin became more effective, Rohit Sharma's team included Kuldeep in the two Super 8 matches. Kuldeep delivered by taking five wickets.

India might consider using all four spinners in upcoming games against Australia and potentially England or South Africa. However, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey indicated this is unlikely but did not entirely dismiss the possibility of a spin-heavy attack.

"It all depends on what surface - I hope the surface won't be that spinner friendly I think going in yes three spinners, I think just add the balance but I'm not very sure all the other venues - in case, I'm saying I don't look like the surface is going to be that dry and going to turn so much," Mhambrey said at the India vs Australia pre-match press conference.

"But yeah if the surface is like that, there's a lot of wear and tear in the wicket yeah for a spinner if you think that's the best option you want to go and enter the game, you might as well go with it."

As hinted by the bowling coach, Chahal could play if the pitch shows significant wear and tear. However, with wickets unlikely to be that dry, he may remain on the bench unless there is an injury to one of the spinners.

Additionally, with Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh performing well across all phases of play, India is unlikely to alter their bowling unit comprising three spinners and three pace options, including all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
