MS Dhoni And IPL 2024: Will The CSK Legend Play In The Next Season?
As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the decision of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wicketkeeper-batter Mahendra Singh Dhoni regarding his future in the Indian Premier League (IPL), speculation is rife. The 2024 IPL season saw CSK miss the playoffs for only the third time in their 15-season history, following a 27-run loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the final league stage match.
With this result, CSK dropped to fifth place, while RCB secured the fourth spot due to a better Net Run Rate (NRR). Questions about Dhoni's future have been circulating since the start of the season, especially as he approaches his 43rd birthday. Physical challenges have also plagued Dhoni, with a persistent knee issue affecting his performance.

After leading CSK to their fifth IPL title in 2023, Dhoni underwent surgery. Despite speculation about his retirement, he assured fans he would continue playing as long as his body permitted. A few months later, it was confirmed that Dhoni would participate in the 2024 IPL season, although he handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The schedule hinted at a potential fairytale ending for Dhoni, with MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai selected as the venue for Qualifier 2 and the Final. Dhoni had expressed a desire to play in front of home fans before retiring, especially after three seasons of matches held behind closed doors or at limited venues.
However, RCB dashed those hopes by eliminating CSK from the playoffs. Dhoni appeared visibly upset after the loss and did not participate in post-match handshakes with RCB players. This has led to widespread speculation about whether this defeat marks his final IPL appearance.
The question on everyone's mind is whether Dhoni will return for another season. Some former teammates believe he won't want to end his career on such a note, while reports suggest that any decision will be made in the coming months.
"Dhoni has not told anybody in CSK that he is quitting. He has told the management that he will wait for a couple of months before taking a final call," Times of India quoted a source close to the developments as saying.
A CSK official added, "We will wait for Dhoni's communication. He always has the best interests of the team in mind; let's see what happens." Many believe that if Dhoni decides to retire, he may do so abruptly, similar to his international career announcement in 2020.
If Dhoni chooses to continue playing, CSK may need to reconsider their retention strategy ahead of the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. The team can retain a maximum of four players, including three Indian players.
