West Indies Prepares For T20I Series Against South Africa Without Key Players
West Indies have announced their 15-member T20I squad for the upcoming home series against South Africa, with notable absences including senior players Andre Russell, Jason Holder, and Alzarri Joseph.
Rovman Powell will continue to lead the West Indies team in the three-match T20I series starting on August 23 in Trinidad. Roston Chase will serve as vice-captain, while Joseph, who was vice-captain during the T20 World Cup, is believed to be rested.

Rovman Powell (captain), Roston Chase (vice captain), Alick Athanaze, Johnson Charles, Matthew Forde, Shimron Hetmyer, Fabian Allen, Shai Hope, Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd.
The squad sees the inclusion of Alick Athanaze and 22-year-old pacer Matthew Forde. Athanaze impressed during the Test series while Forde last played in May against South Africa.
West Indies vs South Africa T20I Series Schedule 2024

"Facing a strong South Africa side is an excellent opportunity for our team to reset and refocus with our game plan," said Miles Bascombe, Director of Cricket at CWI. "We have played them recently and had mixed results."
The West Indies have been successful in four of their last five bilateral T20I series. However, they missed out on a semi-final spot in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 after losing to South Africa in June.
"Andre Russell requested a period of rest and recovery as well as Jason Holder who played five back-to-back Tests against England and South Africa. During this period, they will work closely with the CWI science and medicine team," added Bascombe.
The absence of senior all-rounders Russell and Holder is notable. Russell has opted for rest and recovery while Holder has been rested after consecutive Tests against England and South Africa.
Apart from Russell and Holder's absence, Brandon King remains sidelined due to a side strain sustained during West Indies' Super Eight fixture in the T20 World Cup earlier this year against England.
"I'm confident in the squad we've selected," Bascombe continued. "With eyes already on the next T20 World Cup in 2026, I know the guys will be keen to show their hunger for success."
South Africa's squad also features new faces with key players like David Miller, Quinton de Kock and Kagiso Rabada missing from the series lineup.
The three matches will be held at Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad & Tobago. The West Indies aim to bounce back after a recent Test series loss to South Africa and continue their good run in T20Is.
This series provides an important opportunity for both teams to test their squads ahead of future international fixtures. Fans can expect competitive cricket as both sides look to make their mark.
