West Indies Recover To 250-5 On Day 1 Against Bangladesh As Louis And Athanaze Miss Centuries
The West Indies made a strong recovery on the first day of the opening Test against Bangladesh, moving from 25-2 to 250-5. Mikyle Louis and Alick Athanaze were instrumental, scoring 97 and 90 respectively, just missing their maiden centuries. Their partnership of 140 runs for the fourth wicket was crucial. By the end of play, Justin Greaves was not out on 11, and Joshua Da Silva remained unbeaten on 14.
Louis initially partnered with Kavem Hodge, adding a stabilising 59 runs for the third wicket after early dismissals by Taskin Ahmed. This helped steady the innings after captain Kraigg Brathwaite and Keacy Carty fell early. Louis and Athanaze then took charge, shifting momentum in favour of the home team, who had been put in to bat after losing the toss.

Throughout most of their partnership, Louis was the dominant force. However, as he neared his century, Athanaze became more aggressive. Athanaze was on 49 when Louis reached 90. By the time Louis was dismissed for 97, Athanaze had advanced to 88 and was scoring freely.
Athanaze achieved his third Test half-century from 85 balls, hitting six fours. He eventually scored 90 off 130 balls with ten fours and a six, accumulating his last 40 runs from just 45 deliveries. Unfortunately, he fell in the 78th over while attempting a sweep shot against Taijul Islam.
Louis had a chance to reach his century but was dropped on 90 by Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz at first slip off Taijul Islam's bowling. This missed opportunity seemed to make him more cautious. He advanced to 94 with a boundary off Hasan Mahmud and then to 97 with singles.
Despite reaching his half-century with careful play from 104 balls, surpassing his previous highest Test score of 57, Louis fell three runs short of a century. Frustration led him to charge at a ball from Mehidy outside off-stump, resulting in an edge to Shahadat Hossain at slip.
Challenges Faced by Openers
"Initially the pitch had an element of moisture so it was difficult at first for the pair opening the batting," said Louis. "As it went on it got a bit easier, the ball started coming on a bit better. Just unfortunate I couldn't get to three figures."
Athanaze seemed poised for his century but mis-timed a sweep shot at 90, leading to a top edge caught by wicketkeeper Litton Das. This marked the second time in four innings that Athanaze has been dismissed in the 90s; he previously scored 92 against South Africa in August.
Early Setbacks and Bowling Highlights
The first session favoured Bangladesh as West Indies reached lunch at 50-2. Brathwaite was trapped lbw by Taskin Ahmed in the 14th over, while Carty was bowled for a duck two overs later. Hodge was run out by Taijul's throw from fine leg while attempting a second run when West Indies were at 84-3 in the 38th over.
Taskin Ahmed emerged as Bangladesh's most successful bowler with figures of 2-46. His early breakthroughs set back West Indies before they managed to recover through key partnerships later in the innings.
