West Indies Advances To T20 World Cup Super Eights, Rutherford Stars
Sherfane Rutherford's career-best unbeaten half-century, combined with stellar performances from pacer Alzarri Joseph and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, propelled the West Indies into the T20 World Cup's Super Eight stage with a 13-run victory over New Zealand.
Rutherford delivered an exceptional innings, hitting six sixes and two fours in his 39-ball 68. This effort lifted the West Indies from a precarious 76 for 7 in 12.3 overs to a competitive 149 for 9. New Zealand, in response, managed only 136 for 9, with Motie taking 3/25.

Joseph was instrumental lower down the order, claiming 4/19 to dismantle the New Zealand batting lineup. With this win, the tournament co-hosts secured their place in the Super Eight stage, while New Zealand's campaign faltered after consecutive losses.
New Zealand had earlier suffered an 84-run defeat to Afghanistan, being bowled out for just 75. Despite their consistent performances in past World Cups, the Black Caps struggled this time. They reached the semi-finals in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 ODI World Cups and made it to the last four in the 2016, 2021, and 2022 T20 World Cups.
In Trinidad, locals celebrated their team's Super Eight qualification with great enthusiasm. The two-time former champions had faced disappointments in recent tournaments, being eliminated in the Super-12 stage in UAE in 2021 and failing to progress beyond the group stage in Australia in 2022.
"It was fantastic. I was sitting there with Nicholas (Pooran) and it was such a beautiful night for someone to stand up and be counted," said skipper Rovman Powell.
"That (Rutherford) innings gave us confidence and belief. We watched what they did well and tried to replicate it. It is one tick in the box, but it is only the start of something big to come. Hopefully we can continue the momentum," Rutherford commented on making it to the Super Eight.
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson made three changes to the lineup that lost to Afghanistan. Trent Boult set the tone by dismissing Johnson Charles (0) in the first over. Boult finished with impressive figures of 4-1-16-3. Nicholas Pooran hit three quick boundaries to become West Indies' highest T20I run-getter, surpassing Chris Gayle.
However, New Zealand regained control as Pooran (17) and Roston Chase (0) were dismissed in successive overs. Captain Rovman Powell's wicket capped off a dominant powerplay for New Zealand at 23/4 after six overs, with Tim Southee (2/21) taking two wickets. James Neesham (1/27) dismissed Brandon King, leaving West Indies reeling at five down by the seventh over.
Rutherford then played a crucial innings, scoring all 37 runs in a closing partnership with Motie that set a new record for the tenth wicket in ICC T20 World Cup history. Rutherford brought up his fifty off the final ball of the 19th over and scored 18 runs off that over alone.
In reply, New Zealand lost both openers Devon Conway (5) and Finn Allen (26) during the powerplay. Motie then turned the match around with his spell of 4-0-25-3. He dismissed Rachin Ravindra and induced an edge from Williamson that went straight to Pooran.
Glenn Phillips kept New Zealand's hopes alive with his 33-ball 40 but was eventually dismissed by Joseph. Needing 33 runs from the last over, Mitchell Santner hit three sixes off four balls but fell short of securing victory for New Zealand.
