West Indies Fights Back As Hodge's Century Narrows England's Lead

Kavem Hodge's century sparked a West Indies resurgence, narrowing the gap to just 65 runs against England on day two of the second Test at Trent Bridge. Chasing England's 416, the visitors faced early setbacks with Mikyle Louis (21), Kraigg Brathwaite (48), and Kirk McKenzie (11) all dismissed, leaving them at 84-3.

Hodge and Alick Athanaze then steadied the innings with a remarkable partnership of 175 runs. Athanaze eventually fell for 82, but Hodge continued his fine form. He celebrated joyfully when he reached his maiden century in only his fourth Test match. The 31-year-old, who had an early reprieve when Joe Root dropped him, scored 120 off 171 balls before being trapped lbw by Chris Woakes.

Hodge's Century Boosts West Indies

Jason Holder and Joshua da Silva carried West Indies to 351-5 by the close of play, positioning them well to take a first-innings lead on day three. This performance marked a significant improvement from their batting display in the first Test.

Reflecting on his achievement, Hodge told Sky Sports, "It was important we put our heads down and took some info from the England first innings. We made use of a good batting track." He added, "It feels amazing [to make a century], it is always good to contribute to the team, especially coming off the first Test when we didn't do so well as a batting unit."

Discussing his partnership with Athanaze and facing Mark Wood's pace, Hodge said, "Facing [Mark] Wood, it is not every day you face a guy who bowls every single ball over 90 miles per hour. It was really important we got through that period as it would have been really difficult for a new batter to start against that."

Not only did Hodge help his team's cause, but he also made history with his century. He became the first player from Dominica to score a Test hundred and the first West Indies batter to achieve this milestone against England since 2017.

This historic achievement underscores Hodge's pivotal role in West Indies' fightback in this Test match. His performance has given his team a solid foundation as they look ahead to day three.

The West Indies' effort on day two has set up an intriguing contest for the remainder of the match. With key contributions from both experienced players and newcomers like Hodge and Athanaze, they have shown resilience and determination.
