West Indies Secure Vital Win Over USA In T20 World Cup To Sustain Semi-Final Ambitions
Shai Hope and Roston Chase played pivotal roles as West Indies maintained their semi-final aspirations with a commanding 9-wicket win over the USA at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Friday, June 21.
Chase's impressive figures of 3 for 19, along with Andre Russell's 3 for 31, restricted the USA to a modest total of 128 in 19.5 overs. Hope then led the charge with an unbeaten 82 off 39 balls, while Nicholas Pooran contributed an unbeaten 27 off 12 balls, guiding West Indies to victory with 9.1 overs remaining.

Hope and Pooran added a quickfire 63 runs off 29 balls, hitting 11 sixes and five fours. Earlier, Hope had formed a solid opening partnership with Johnson Charles, adding 67 runs for the first wicket. Charles scored 15 off 14 balls before being dismissed by Harmeet Singh, the only wicket-taker for the USA.
USA started well in the powerplay with Andries Gous (29 off 16 balls) and Nitish Kumar (20 off 19 balls) taking the team to 51 for 1. However, Gudakesh Motie triggered a collapse by dismissing Nitish. From a promising position of 51 for 1, USA slumped to 88 for 6 as Chase dismantled the middle-order, including key players Aaron Jones and Corey Anderson.
Milind Kumar (19 off 21 balls) and Shadley van Schalkwyk (18 off 17 balls) offered some resistance to push the total past 100. Ali Khan's late cameo of 14 not out from five balls helped USA reach a total of 128. For West Indies, Alzarri Joseph also contributed with two wickets for 31 runs, while Akeal Hosein and Obed McCoy went wicketless.
Implications for Semi-Final Spots
This victory propels West Indies above South Africa in terms of net run rate (NRR). The two teams are set to clash in a potential eliminator on Sunday, June 23 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua & Barbuda.
Despite this setback, USA still has a chance to make it to the semi-finals. They will face England in their final Super 8 match on Sunday, June 23 in Barbados. However, they need to secure a significant win against the defending champions to keep their slim hopes alive.
