West Indies Clinches Victory Against Afghanistan Ahead Of Super 8 In T20 World Cup
Nicholas Pooran's stellar performance and a comprehensive bowling effort led West Indies to a commanding 104-run victory over Afghanistan at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium. This match marked the final group stage game before the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Pooran's explosive 98 runs helped West Indies post a formidable 218/5 in their allotted 20 overs. Obed McCoy then spearheaded the bowling attack, taking 3 wickets for just 14 runs in his 3 overs, as Afghanistan was bowled out for 114 in 16.2 overs.

Only Ibrahim Zadran (38 off 28 balls) and Azmatullah Omarzai (23 off 19 balls) managed to put up some resistance for Afghanistan. The rest of the Afghan batters struggled to keep up with the required run rate as West Indies bowlers took wickets at regular intervals.
McCoy, playing his first game of the tournament, emerged as the top wicket-taker for West Indies. Spin bowlers Akeal Hosein (2 for 21) and Gudakesh Motie (2 for 28) also contributed significantly by taking two wickets each.
Alzarri Joseph and Andre Russell chipped in with a wicket apiece, ensuring that West Indies advanced to the Super Eight stage undefeated. They had previously secured victories over New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Uganda in Group C.
Opting to bat first, West Indies set the highest first-innings total of the ongoing tournament and their highest ever in T20 World Cups. They also achieved the highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup history.
After losing Brandon King early, Johnson Charles (43 off 27 balls) and Pooran accelerated quickly, scoring 36 runs off Omarzai's bowling. Following Charles' dismissal, Pooran formed crucial partnerships with Shai Hope (25 off 17 balls) and captain Rovman Powell (26 off 15 balls), pushing West Indies past the 200-run mark.
Pooran narrowly missed out on a century but was named player of the match. Reflecting on his performance, he said, "You don't want to be on 97 and get run-out but it was all about reaching a respectable total. I assessed the conditions early on, we had a good start in the powerplay, I had to take responsibility in the middle overs with the Afghanistan spinners bowling."
For Afghanistan, Gulbadin Naib stood out with figures of 2 for 14 in his 2 overs. Omarzai and Naveen-ul-Haq each claimed a wicket but were expensive, conceding 41 runs apiece in their spells.
Pooran added, "It's difficult to strike the ball when it's a little slow and spinning, but when you get a good wicket like this, you got to capitalise, got to appreciate the conditions."
The left-handed batter also highlighted the team's consistent performance over the past year. "It's just not today; it started 12-14 months ago we have been consistent as a team, we went to No. 3 in the rankings. In the last game, Rutherford took the opportunity and played wonderfully; he inspired us," Pooran noted.
