Wasim Jaffer Vs Shaun Tait: The Race For Punjab's Ranji Trophy Head Coach Heats Up

The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) is on the verge of announcing their new coach for the upcoming domestic season. The competition for this role has narrowed down to two international cricket stars.

Interestingly, the final contenders are from India and Australia. Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer and Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait are competing for the head coach position of Punjab's Ranji Trophy team.

Jaffer-Tait in Coach Race for Punjab

Wasim Jaffer, who retired in March 2020, holds the record for the most runs in Ranji Trophy history. He has previously coached Uttarakhand and Odisha and was involved with Bangladesh's U-19 team. Additionally, Jaffer served as the batting coach for Punjab Kings in the IPL.

If chosen, Shaun Tait would bring his experience as a former Australian speedster to Punjab's coaching setup. His international background could offer valuable insights to Punjab's bowlers. Notably, Tait wouldn't be Punjab's first foreign coach; former Pakistan player Intikhab Alam coached them in 2004.

The PCA received over 45 applications for the head coach job. Although they have not yet finalized their decision, they plan to announce the new coach within a week.

"We have received over 45 applicants for the head coach role of the Punjab senior team. Two of the prominent names are former India opener Wasim Jaffer and former Australia speedster Shaun Tait. The process is still underway and we will announce the name by next week," a PCA official was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

Previous Coach's Achievements

Aavishkar Salvi, a former Mumbai player, is stepping down as Punjab's coach after taking up the role in 2022. Under Salvi’s guidance, Punjab reached the knockout stages of all three domestic tournaments in the 2022-23 season. They made it to the semi-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and reached the quarter-finals of both the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Ranji Trophy.

Salvi also led Punjab to victory in last year's Mushtaq Ali Trophy, ending a three-decade-long wait for a domestic title.

The PCA aims to build on these achievements with their new head coach, hoping to continue their success in domestic cricket.
