Washington Freedom Edges Out MI New York In Rain-Affected MLC 2024 Clash
Washington Freedom clinched a narrow victory over MI New York (MINY) in the rain-affected third match of the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2024 season at Church Street Park, Morisville, North Carolina. They won by four runs through the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
Steve Smith, captain of Washington Freedom, won the toss and opted to field first. This decision paid off as USA's emerging cricket talent Saurabh Netravalkar led the bowling attack with an outstanding performance. Netravalkar was named 'Player of the Match' for his spell, taking 3 wickets for just 24 runs.

Justin Dill supported Netravalkar well, also claiming 3 wickets while conceding 33 runs. Their combined efforts kept MI New York's batting line-up under pressure, causing regular fall of wickets.
Despite this, West Indies' Nicholas Pooran displayed his batting skills with a quick 44 off 30 balls. Contributions from Afghanistan's Rashid Khan, who scored 31 off 15 balls, and South Africa's Anrich Nortje, with 14 off 9 balls, helped MI New York post a total of 154 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Washington Freedom faced a challenging target of 155 under threatening rain clouds. Their innings began poorly as Travis Head was dismissed early for just one run in the second over.
However, Steve Smith anchored the chase with a composed yet aggressive approach. Smith remained unbeaten on 46 off 28 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes. Andries Gous provided solid support from the other end.
As Washington reached 55 for one in 7.4 overs, play was halted due to lightning followed by rain. With no further play possible, match officials used the DLS method to determine the result. Thanks to Smith's brisk scoring rate, Washington Freedom edged out MI New York by four runs under DLS calculations.
This victory marked a strong start for Washington Freedom in their campaign. The team's performance highlighted key contributions from both bowlers and batsmen under challenging conditions.
