Wanindu Hasaranga Steps Down As Sri Lanka's T20I Captain After World Cup Exit

Sri Lanka's star spinner, Wanindu Hasaranga, has stepped down as the captain of the national T20I team. This decision comes after Sri Lanka's early exit from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.

Hasaranga, who took on the role of T20I captain last year, led the team in 10 matches. He is currently ranked as the number one all-rounder in T20Is.

Hasaranga Resigns as T20I Captain

In a statement from Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC), Hasaranga mentioned that stepping down was in the best interest of the team. He stressed his dedication to contributing as a player and supporting the team's leadership. "Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always," he wrote in his resignation letter to SLC.

Despite resigning from the captaincy, SLC confirmed that Hasaranga would continue to be an essential part of their squads. His skills and experience remain invaluable for the team.

Sri Lanka is gearing up to face India in a home white-ball bilateral series starting on July 26. The squad and new skipper for this series are yet to be announced. Team India will play three T20Is and three ODIs during their tour. This series marks the first assignment for new head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Hasaranga's tenure as captain had mixed results, but his commitment to the team remains strong. As Sri Lanka prepares for the upcoming series against India, fans and teammates look forward to seeing Hasaranga excel on the field.
