Kohli And Rohit Sharma Urged By Greg Chappell To Rekindle Youthful Focus For Upcoming Test Series
As Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma gear up for a significant Test series in Australia, former India head coach Greg Chappell believes they can revive the energy and focus of their younger days. This series is crucial for both players as they aim to regain their past glory.
India, still reeling from a 0-3 home series loss to New Zealand, is set to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in a five-match Test series starting November 22. Chappell emphasises that Sharma and Kohli need to channel the drive and focus from their prime years to succeed abroad.

Chappell recalled a conversation with Sachin Tendulkar in 2005 about the challenges ageing players face. Tendulkar asked, "Greg, why does batting become harder as you get older? Surely it should get easier?" Chappell explained that mental demands increase with age.
"Batting gets harder because you realise how hard it is to make runs at this level and how difficult it is to maintain the mental focus that is required to be successful," Chappell wrote in a column for 'Sydney Morning Herald'.
He noted that it's not eyesight or reflexes that decline with age but maintaining intense focus becomes more challenging. As players age, opponents exploit weaknesses, making it tougher to stay focused on scoring runs.
The upcoming Test series will test not just skill but also wits and endurance. Players like Sharma, Kohli, and Steve Smith must summon the drive of their younger selves. Opponents have studied their techniques and devised strategies to exploit any weaknesses.
Kohli's recent performance against New Zealand was his lowest-ever aggregate in a home Test series where he batted at least six times. He scored only 93 runs at an average of 15.50, including one half-century.
This slump has lowered his Test average from a peak of 55.10 in October 2019 to 47.83, marking the first time it has dipped below 48 since November 2016. Kohli has dropped out of the top-20 batters in ICC Test rankings for the first time in a decade, falling eight spots to 22nd while Rohit slipped to 26th.
Kohli's Rejuvenation Task
"For Kohli, the task is one of rejuvenation," Chappell wrote. Known for his unmatched intensity and high standards, Kohli's recent struggles will have frustrated him. He needs to balance aggression with patience and focus as he seeks to reaffirm his status as India's top batsman.
Rohit's challenge lies in balancing his aggressive instincts with the caution required in Test cricket. As captain, he must maintain his form while handling leadership pressures—a balance crucial for India's success.
A Defining Series
This Test series represents more than just another cricket chapter; it highlights challenges posed by time even for skilled players. Each player is an icon of determination and skill defining cricket today.
"For Sharma, Kohli, and (Steve) Smith," Chappell wrote, "the true battle is not against their opponents but against time itself." This series will be pivotal in shaping their legacies as cricketers who faced time's challenges head-on.
