Virat Kohli's Influence Pivotal For Cricket's Olympic Inclusion At LA 2028

Cricket's return to the Olympics in 2028 is an exciting development for sports enthusiasts globally. Olympics director Niccolo Campriani praised Virat Kohli following the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Campriani attributed cricket's re-inclusion in the next Summer Games to Indian cricket star Kohli's influence. He highlighted Kohli's global stature and reach as crucial in boosting cricket's popularity, particularly in the United States.

Kohli Boosts Cricket at Olympics 2028

King Kohli's significant impact as a sports icon played a pivotal role in bringing cricket back into the Olympic spotlight. Campriani noted that Kohli's remarkable social media presence, with 314 million followers, makes him the third most-followed athlete globally. This surpasses the combined following of LeBron James, Tom Brady, and Tiger Woods.

Moreover, Campriani expressed his excitement about cricket's return, describing it as the world's second most popular sport with an estimated 2.5 billion fans. Including cricket in the Olympics is part of a broader strategy to promote the sport in the U.S., aiming to engage the American audience and enhance the sporting culture there.

Cricket was last featured in the Olympics in 1900 during the Paris Games. Only one match was played between Great Britain and France, with Great Britain emerging victorious. Since then, cricket has been absent from the Olympics. The T20 format is set to make a comeback in Los Angeles in 2028.

The Paris Games featured 32 sports, including new additions like Breaking and Kayak Cross, and returning events such as Surfing, Skateboarding, Sport Climbing, and 3x3 Basketball. For the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, five new sports - Cricket, Baseball/Softball, Flag Football, Lacrosse, and Squash are proposed to join the programme.

Paris 2024 Medal Tally

The 2024 Paris Summer Olympics concluded with the USA leading the medal tally with 126 medals (40 Gold, 44 Silver, 42 Bronze), followed by China with 91 medals (40 Gold, 27 Silver, 24 Bronze). Japan secured third place with 45 medals (20 Gold, 12 Silver, 13 Bronze) and Australia rounded out the top four with 53 medals (18 Gold, 19 Silver, 16 Bronze).

This decision to feature T20 cricket aims to engage more audiences and enhance sporting culture globally. The inclusion of these new sports reflects a dynamic approach to keeping the Olympic Games relevant and exciting for future generations.

Campriani emphasized that Kohli’s global stature was crucial in boosting cricket’s popularity worldwide. His influence has significantly contributed to bringing cricket back into focus on such a prestigious platform.

The return of cricket marks a significant milestone for fans who have long awaited its comeback on this international stage. With its rich history and growing popularity, cricket’s inclusion promises an exciting addition to future Olympic Games.
