Vignesh Puthur: From Auto Driver's Son To Mumbai Indians Player Pursuing MA In Literature

In the lively town of Perinthalmanna in Kerala's Malappuram district, dreams often require determination and hard work. Vignesh Puthur is a recent example of turning such dreams into reality.

Vignesh Puthur, a 23-year-old cricketer from Kerala, has seen his life reflect this spirit. As a right-handed batter and left-arm spinner from a humble background, he achieved his dream of playing in the IPL when Mumbai Indians selected him during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.

Vignesh Puthur: Kerala Cricketer in IPL 2025

Born on 2nd March 2001 in Perinthalmanna, Vignesh is a spin bowling all-rounder who bowls left-arm spin. His journey to the IPL is one of perseverance and dedication.

Vignesh's path to cricketing success began with modest roots. His father, Sunil Kumar, works as an auto driver, while his mother, KP Bindu, is a homemaker. Despite financial constraints, they have consistently supported his cricketing ambitions.

Currently pursuing an MA in Literature at PTM Government College in Perinthalmanna, Vignesh balances academics with his cricket commitments. He was surprised by his selection in the IPL 2025 with Mumbai Indians.

"I was watching the auction from home. I didn't expect a chance in the IPL Mega Auction. My only dream was to play in the IPL," Vignesh shared in an exclusive interview with MyKhel Malayalam.

Although Vignesh doesn't have a specific favourite franchise, he admires two players from Mumbai Indians - Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya. "Rohit and Hardik have always been my favorites in the MI team. I am so happy to work with these superstars," he added to MyKhel Malayalam.

For someone whose cricket journey has been driven by limited resources and strong self-belief, sharing the dressing room with icons like Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav is truly a dream come true.

The Role of Kerala Cricket League

The inaugural Kerala Cricket League (KCL) played a crucial role in Vignesh's IPL breakthrough. Representing Alleppey Ripples under former RCB player Mohammed Azharuddeen's leadership, he impressed during limited opportunities.

In three matches for Alleppey Ripples, Vignesh took two wickets but didn't get to showcase his batting skills. However, it was enough to catch the attention of Mumbai Indians' scouts who were closely monitoring KCL. His performances led to an invitation for trials by MI.

Guidance from Sanju Samson

While awaiting his senior team debut for Kerala, playing in the IPL under world-class coaches and players will boost his growth. He has already bowled against Sanju Samson in nets and received valuable advice on his bowling from the India star.

This opportunity marks a significant step forward for Vignesh as he continues to develop his skills alongside some of cricket's biggest names.
