Hosts USA Secure Dramatic Super Over Win Against Pakistan In World Cup Opener
The United States achieved a historic World Cup upset with a dramatic five-run victory in the super over against Pakistan on Thursday. Pakistan had a shaky start, losing two wickets in the first three overs. Captain Babar Azam eventually top-scored with 44 runs after a slow power play. The US bowled effectively, with Nosthush Kenjige taking 3-30.
Pakistan concluded their innings at 159-7, aided by Shadab Khan's 40 runs. Monank Patel scored 50 off 38 balls by the end of the 13th over before being caught by Rizwan. The home fans began to sense an upset. Despite losing two wickets in seven balls, the US finished strong. Aaron Jones scored 36, including two boundaries, and Nitish Kumar hit a four on the final ball to keep the game alive.

In the super over, Jones and Harmeet Singh excelled, scoring 18-0 as Pakistan struggled to maintain composure. Kumar emerged as the hero again by catching Iftikhar Ahmed, preventing Pakistan from chasing down the target. The US now sits at the top of Group A after two victories.

Saurabh Netravalkar was another standout bowler for the US, finishing with 2-18 and taking a crucial wicket in the super over. He has now become the top wicket-taker for the US in T20Is with 29 wickets, surpassing Nisarg Patel's 27. Steven Taylor also set a new record for the most catches by a fielder (10) in T20Is for the US, exceeding Patel's nine.
Despite being on the losing side, Amar created his own piece of history by becoming the top scorer in T20Is with 4067 runs, surpassing Virat Kohli's 4038 runs.
