Toronto Nationals Triumph In Global T20 Canada 2024, Beating Montreal Tigers

Andries Gous shone with an unbeaten fifty as Toronto Nationals clinched the Global T20 Canada title. They secured an eight-wicket win against the defending champions, Montreal Tigers, in the GT20 Canada 2024 final on Sunday (August 11).

Earlier on Saturday (August 10), Toronto Nationals advanced to the final after a solid all-round performance from Romario Shepherd. They defeated Brampton Wolves by five wickets in Qualifier 2, ensuring their spot in Sunday's title clash.

Toronto Wins T20 Canada 2024 Title

The eliminator match between Mississauga Bangla Tigers and Toronto Nationals was declared a forfeit by the former due to rain delays. Despite repeated inspections, the umpires and match referee decided to hold a super over at 7:30 pm Local Time, with the toss scheduled for 7:10 pm Local Time.

At the time of the toss, only the Toronto Nationals captain was present. The Bangla Tigers team refused to appear. The match referee explained the consequences of this action to their captain, leading to the umpire calling off the match.

Based on the match referee's report, the Tournament Technical Committee awarded the match to Toronto Nationals. This decision allowed them to advance and face Brampton Wolves in Qualifier 2.

In Qualifier 2, Nick Hobson's unbeaten half-century helped Brampton Wolves post a challenging total of 141/8 in their 20 overs. The Australian scored 51 runs off 34 deliveries, hitting five boundaries and two sixes.

Toronto Nationals' chase was anchored by openers Unmukt Chand and Colin Munro. They put together an opening partnership of 57 runs off 33 deliveries, setting a strong foundation for their victory.

In the final, Montreal Tigers were restricted to a modest total of 96 for 9. Gous then played a crucial role with an unbeaten 58 after Toronto lost its two openers for just 12 runs at CAA Centre in Brampton.

The United States wicketkeeper-batter Gous hit eight fours in his 49-ball innings. He shared an impressive 85-run stand with South African Rassie van der Dussen, who contributed 30 runs off 34 balls. Toronto completed their chase with ease, finishing with 30 balls to spare.

This marked Toronto Nationals' first title win. Colin Munro's side had earlier overcome Brampton Wolves in Qualifier 2 on Saturday (August 10) to reach the final after rain affected the playoffs round in Brampton during that weekend.
