Toronto Nationals Triumph In GT20 Canada 2024, Securing First Title

Toronto Nationals secured their first Global T20 Canada title by defeating Montreal Tigers by 8 wickets in the GT20 Canada 2024 final at TD Stadium in Brampton on Sunday, August 11.

The challenging batting conditions at the TD Stadium were worsened by heavy rain, delaying the toss by a couple of hours. Toronto skipper Colin Munro won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that paid off as Montreal struggled to post a modest total of 96/9 in their 20 overs.

Australian pacer Jason Behrendorff exploited the conditions brilliantly, delivering an exceptional spell of swing bowling with figures of 3/8 in his four overs. This triggered a collapse in Montreal's top order, putting Toronto in control early on.

Montreal faced their first setback when Toronto pacer Romario Shepherd dismissed opener Praveen Kumar in the second over. The Tigers then suffered a double blow as Behrendorff removed Gerhard Erasmus (2) and Tim Seifert (0) off consecutive deliveries.

Chris Lynn (3) didn't last long either, falling to a wild slog off Behrendorff that resulted in an easy catch for Toronto wicketkeeper Unmukt Chand. Sherfane Rutherford (1) followed soon after, offering an easy catch off Junaid Siddiqui's bowling.

The Toronto chase began poorly with skipper Colin Munro trapped leg before for nought by Azmatullah Omarzai off the second ball of the opening over. Bosch bowled fellow opener Unmukt Chand (4) in the next over, raising hopes of a strong fightback by Montreal.

However, Andries Gous and Rassie van der Dussen (30 not out) dashed those hopes with an unbeaten partnership of 85 runs. Gous remained unbeaten on 58 runs off 49 balls despite suffering a broken finger shortly after arriving at the crease.
