Test Twenty: A Groundbreaking 80-Over Format Merging Test And T20 Cricket Styles Set For Launch

The cricket world is set to embrace a revolutionary new format named Test Twenty, an 80-over game that marries the strategic depth of Test cricket with the brisk pace of T20 matches.

This innovative concept, the brainchild of sports entrepreneur Gaurav Bahirvani, founder of the One One Six Network, aims to cultivate a new breed of cricket stars by introducing what's been dubbed the "Fourth Format." This singular day event is designed to both honor the rich history of cricket and propel its growth into the future.

Test Twenty Cricket s New Era Begins

In a significant move to bridge the generational divide in cricket, Test Twenty will be showcased in a one-day match comprising two innings of 20 overs for each team. This format maintains the traditional outcomes of a cricket match—win, loss, tie, or draw—but presents it within a timeframe that suits modern broadcasting needs. Gaurav Bahirvani articulates this vision with clarity, stating, "This isn't another league, it's a living tribute to the spirit of cricket. Test Twenty preserves the game's legacy while shaping its future."

The initiative has received backing from a stellar line-up of cricket legends, including AB de Villiers, Sir Clive Lloyd, Matthew Hayden, and Harbhajan Singh, all of whom are part of the format's advisory board. These icons have expressed their support with enthusiasm. De Villiers sees it as "innovation with intent — a new dream for players and fans alike." Lloyd appreciates how it "restores the art and rhythm of the game while keeping it alive with modern energy."

Hayden views the format as "a bridge between generations." Echoing these sentiments, Harbhajan Singh believes that "Cricket needed a fresh heartbeat — Test Twenty® does exactly that."

A Platform for the Youth

More ambitiously, Test Twenty seeks to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for young cricketers aged 13 to 19. The plan includes launching the Junior Test Twenty Championship (JTTC), which will extend over 50 countries, creating a structured route from amateur to professional cricket.

Bahirvani likens the vision to building the "NCAA equivalent for cricket," a meritocracy that nurtures young talent across the globe. This initiative is underpinned by a commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for talent scouting.

At the heart of Test Twenty's mission to discover and develop young talent is its proprietary AI Discovery Engine. This advanced tool will use video analytics, motion sensors, and data science for unbiased player evaluations. By collaborating with cricket boards and academies worldwide, Test Twenty aims to ensure a transparent and equitable system for unearthing future cricket stars.

Launch and Global Reach

The inaugural season of Test Twenty is slated for launch in January 2026. It will feature six franchises — three in India and three internationally, in Dubai, London, and a to-be-announced city in the US. Each team will comprise a balanced mix of eight Indian and eight international players, promoting both cultural diversity and cricketing excellence. Registration for interested young players opened at 7:00 PM IST on the official Test Twenty website.

Cricket authorities and former players have voiced their support for this transformative venture. Former BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah hailed it as "a defining step in cricket's story — a visionary bridge between tradition and modernity." Madan Lal, a 1983 World Cup winner, praised the platform for connecting "grassroots talent with the global stage."
