Team India Seeks New Head Coach After Dravid's Successful Tenure
Rahul Dravid's tenure as Team India head coach concluded after the T20 World Cup 2024. The cricket legend, who never won the World Cup as a player, finally lifted the prestigious trophy as a coach following India's 7-run victory over South Africa in the final on June 29.
Under Dravid's leadership, Team India made significant strides, reaching the finals of both the ODI World Cup and the 2023 World Test Championship, although they lost to Australia in both events. Despite these setbacks, Dravid's methods and team unity led to India's triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup, ending an 11-year ICC title drought.

Speculation is rife about who will succeed Dravid. Reports suggest that former World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir is a strong contender for the role. Gambhir has been tight-lipped about replacing his former teammate but is seen as a likely candidate by Indian media.
The BCCI president Roger Binny hinted at Gambhir's potential appointment after India's T20 World Cup win. Binny emphasized the need for a coach with experience in all formats of cricket, which aligns well with Gambhir's background.
"Gautam Gambhir has got a lot of experience and if he takes the job it's definitely going to be a good thing for Indian cricket. He is experienced that's what India needs. India needs a coach who played the game, and he has played in all three formats of the game," Binny was quoted as saying to ANI.
Dravid took over from Ravi Shastri in 2021 on a two-year contract, later extending it by seven months to cover the T20 World Cup. At 51, Dravid had the option to extend his stay but informed BCCI he would not re-apply for the position at "this stage in my life."
With Dravid stepping down, changes are expected in other coaching roles too. Batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip are also likely to leave. Gambhir reportedly wants to select his backroom team if appointed.
Potential candidates for these roles include former pacers Irfan Pathan or Zaheer Khan for bowling coach and Jony Rhodes for fielding coach. These appointments are anticipated soon.
The BCCI had advertised the head coach vacancy since early May but received only one application. Jay Shah confirmed that appointing a foreign coach was not considered, dismissing rumours about international candidates like Ricky Ponting or Justin Langer.
Gambhir's experience as mentor of IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders strengthens his candidacy for Team India's head coach role. His appointment could bring fresh perspectives and strategies to Indian cricket.
The conclusion of Dravid’s tenure marks an end of an era for Team India’s coaching staff. As new faces prepare to step in, fans eagerly await announcements that will shape the future of Indian cricket.
