Tamim Iqbal Slams Bangladesh's Approach In T20 World Cup Decider

Veteran Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal voiced his frustration over Bangladesh's lacklustre performance in their crucial Super 8 match against Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup 2024. The match had significant stakes, as a semi-final spot was on the line.

The game required Bangladesh to chase a modest target of 116 runs within 12.1 overs to keep their semi-final hopes alive. Despite an aggressive start, they faltered and ultimately failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Tamim Critiques Bangladesh's T20 Strategy

Bangladesh began their chase with aggressive intent, with opener Litton Das setting the tone early on. However, Afghanistan's bowlers struck back with key wickets, stalling the momentum. At the nine-over mark, Bangladesh was still in contention at 73/5, with Das looking in fine form.

The turning point came when Towhid Hridoy was dismissed, leading to a loss of aggressive intent from the team. Reflecting on this, Tamim Iqbal criticized the lack of determination in the latter stages of the chase.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Tamim expressed his disappointment: "Bangladesh will be very disappointed. I think Bangladesh should have gone for the chase, even if it meant getting bowled out for 70 or 80. They anyways went on to lose the match, but they had the opportunity to do something very special and these kinds of opportunities do not come around very often, especially after not winning anything in the Super 8."

He believed that maintaining an aggressive approach was crucial, even at the risk of being bowled out cheaply. Tamim highlighted that while there were glimpses of intent, it wasn't sustained throughout the innings.

Missed Opportunities

"In patches, Bangladesh looked like they were going for the chase, but then wickets fell and there was less intent in the batting in a few of the overs," he added. This inconsistency cost them dearly as they managed only 82 runs by the 12.1 over mark.

Tamim further elaborated: "At least if they had tried to chase it down and lost by 30-40 runs, people would have understood that there was an opportunity and we tried and we failed, but that is fine. Neither did we win the game, nor did we try to chase it down."

Disappointing End

Ultimately, Bangladesh ended their Super 8 campaign without a single victory, finishing on a disappointing note. Tamim Iqbal's comments reflect a missed opportunity and highlight the need for a more fearless approach in high-stakes matches.
