T20 World Cup Finals: Tracing India, England, And South Africa's Journey

South Africa made history by reaching their first T20 World Cup final with a 9-wicket win over Afghanistan in the semi-final on June 26, 2024, in Tarouba, Trinidad.

The Proteas finally broke their semi-final curse in both ODI and T20 World Cups. They had previously failed to advance past the last four in seven major tournaments.

T20 Cup Final Appearances Compared

India, England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, and West Indies have all reached the T20 World Cup final before South Africa's recent achievement.

New Zealand reached the final once but lost to Australia in 2021. Australia has qualified twice for the final. West Indies won both times they reached the final.

India has made it to the final twice and could reach it for a third time along with Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and England. These teams have a chance to make it to the final for the fourth time.

Which Team Has Reached The T20 World Cup Final Most?

Sri Lanka has reached the final three times: 2009, 2012, and 2014 (Champions). Pakistan has also been finalists three times: 2007 (Runners Up), 2009 (Champions), and 2022 (Runners Up).

England reached the finals in 2010 (Champions), 2016 (Runners Up), and 2022 (Champions). Australia was runners-up in 2010 and champions in 2021.

West Indies won both their finals in 2012 and 2016. New Zealand was runners-up in their only final appearance in 2021. South Africa will now join this list after their recent success.

Aiden Markram's team ended South Africa's long-standing jinx with a dominant performance against Afghanistan. They are now set to face either India or England on June 29 for the title.

South Africa had previously stumbled at the semi-final stage of the T20 World Cups in 2009 and 2014. They also exited at this stage during ODI World Cups in 1992, 1999, 2007, 2015, and most recently in 2023.

This victory makes South Africa only the eighth team to qualify for a T20 World Cup final. The upcoming match will determine if they can secure their first title.

The Proteas' journey to this point has been marked by numerous near-misses. Their fans will be hoping that this breakthrough leads to ultimate success on Saturday.
