T20 World Cup 2024: Sri Lanka Vs South Africa Award Winners, Man Of The Match, Post Match Presentation, Scorecard And Records
South Africa triumphed in their opening match of the T20 World Cup 2024, defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets. The match, held in New York, saw South Africa chase down a target of 151 runs with two overs to spare.
Sri Lanka, batting first, posted a total of 150 runs. Kusal Mendis contributed a resilient 45-run knock, while Dhananjaya de Silva added crucial runs towards the end. However, Anrich Nortje's exceptional bowling performance, taking four wickets for just 22 runs, restricted Sri Lanka's progress.

South Africa's chase began strongly with openers Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma setting the tone. Despite some middle-order hiccups, a composed 40-run partnership between David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen guided the team to victory.

SL vs SA, T20 World Cup 2024 Match 1: Who Said What
Anrich Nortje, awarded Man of the Match, expressed his satisfaction with his performance. "Definitely, this will get some momentum going. Tough few days, we've worked hard and it's nice to get some momentum," he said. Nortje highlighted the importance of early wickets and adapting to the conditions quickly.
South Africa's captain Aiden Markram was pleased with the win despite acknowledging the challenging batting conditions. "Happy with the win. The batting was little up and down, probably speaks to quite a tough wicket and luckily we found ways to score on this," he noted.
Sri Lanka's captain Wanindu Hasaranga reflected on his team's strategy and future prospects. "Our batters tried for 160-170. To be honest this was a 120 wicket especially with our bowlers," he said. Hasaranga remains optimistic about their upcoming matches.
The run rate of 4.42 in this match is the lowest ever in a T20 World Cup match and second lowest in a T20 International between two Full Member sides.
