Rain Halts Sri Lanka Vs Nepal T20 World Cup Match, Affects Super 8 Hopes

Sri Lanka and Nepal were compelled to share a point each after their Group D match at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Lauderhill, Florida, was washed out due to rain and a wet outfield on Wednesday, June 12.

The toss was initially delayed due to heavy rain, and later the match was abandoned altogether without a ball bowled due to the wet outfield. This outcome dented Sri Lanka's slim hopes of securing a Super 8 berth.

Rain Stops Sri Lanka-Nepal Match

Sri Lanka vs Nepal is the second game affected by rain in the T20 World Cup 2024. Earlier, the Group B encounter between England and Scotland was also washed out, potentially impacting the defending champions' chances of qualification.

Despite both teams earning one point after the game was called off in Lauderhill, Sri Lanka remained at the bottom of the Group D points table due to defeats in their first two matches. Nepal held the fourth place in the standings with one win in two outings.

Sri Lanka's chances of progress are slim now, given that they have only one match left to play. The other three teams—Bangladesh, Netherlands, and Nepal—will have at least one more game to join South Africa in the Super 8 from Group D.

Nepal will now travel to the West Indies to start the second half of the tournament. In their upcoming match, Rohit Paudel's Nepal will take on South Africa on Saturday at the Arnos Vale Stadium.

On the other hand, Sri Lanka will face Netherlands in their final match on June 17. The Islanders need a win to keep their slim hopes of qualification for the next round of the tournament alive.

After the match between Sri Lanka and Nepal was abandoned due to rain, South Africa became the first team to qualify for the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024.
