Controversial Dead Ball Decision In T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan Vs USA Clash

Pakistan experienced a surprising defeat to the USA in their T20 World Cup 2024 group stage opener on Thursday (June 6). A contentious dead ball decision in the final over could have altered the match's outcome.

Pakistan, batting first, posted 159 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas. The tournament co-hosts, USA, matched this score, leading to a super over to determine the winner.

USA's left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige took three wickets for 30 runs. Pakistan struggled to accelerate, with skipper Babar Azam (44 off 43 balls) and Shadab Khan (40 off 25 balls) being the top contributors. Shaheen Shah Afridi added an unbeaten 23 off 16 balls to push Pakistan past 150.

There could have been two more runs added to Pakistan's total when USA wicketkeeper Monank Patel made a wayward throw back to bowler Ali Khan. However, when Afridi and Haris Rauf ran for what was assumed as overthrows, the umpires called it a dead ball after a brief discussion following American protests.

If that dead ball decision was incorrect, Pakistan might have been deprived of a win as the extra two runs could have prevented a super over, which USA won by defending 18 runs. However, according to the law of the game, the decision was correct.

The controversial decision occurred when USA skipper Monank Patel collected the ball behind the stumps after Shaheen Shah Afridi missed a short-pitched delivery. Patel returned it to bowler Ali Khan on the first delivery of the 20th over.

According to MCC law 20.1, "The ball becomes dead when it is finally settled in the hands of the wicket-keeper or of the bowler." Therefore, based on this rule, the dead ball decision was justified.

One commentator questioned the call on-air, and some social media users also expressed doubts. One user asked what would have happened if there had been a run out at the non-striker's end.

Another user on X cited a county game example and stated that it was "a total wrong decision by umpires as the ball was clearly not dead since it was thrown back to expedite a run out."

Despite mixed opinions on the dead ball call, Pakistan did not perform at their best. The USA deserved their win after excelling in all three aspects of the Group A match.
