'T20 World Cup 2024 Will Fuel Dreams Of Young Cricketers To Represent USA At LA Olympics,' Says US U19 Cricketer Nitish Sudini

Nitish Roenik Kumar's cricketing journey has been noteworthy. He became the youngest player to debut for Canada in a first-class match and participated in all but one of Canada's eight matches at the 2010 Under-19 World Cup Qualifiers.

Making his first-class debut in an ICC Intercontinental Cup against Kenya in August 2009, he debuted in ODIs in February 2010 at just 15 years and 273 days, making him the second youngest ODI player ever, after Pakistan's Hasan Raza in 1996.

'T20 World Cup 2024 to Fuel Dreams of Young Cricketers

By 2012, he had also debuted in T20Is, eventually playing 18 T20Is for Canada. At the 2011 World Cup, Nitish Kumar became the youngest player to feature in the tournament. Kumar was appointed captain of the national men's team in October 2016 at the age of 22.

Kumar's career took a significant turn when he moved to the USA around 2020. He graduated through the Minor League to the Major League Cricket system in the USA and eventually debuted for the US Cricket Team in April 2024.

The right-handed batter - who is part of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup USA squad - in an exclusive interaction with myKhel, discussed the growing popularity of cricket in the USA, its future, and the sport's potential inclusion in the LA Olympics.

When asked about his views on the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA, Kumar said, "The USA co-hosting the T20 World Cup is a tremendous milestone for cricket in the country. Top cricketers from around the world are here, and the timing couldn't be better, with the tournament falling during the summer break for schools and colleges.

"It's a fantastic opportunity for cricket lovers and aspiring cricketers to watch top nations compete. Over the past two to five years, there's been a steady growth in cricket's popularity in the USA, and I anticipate this growth will accelerate significantly in the next five to ten years," he remarked.

Addressing cricket's place in the USA, where American football, baseball, and basketball dominate, Kumar stated, "Absolutely, there's a significant amount of excitement about cricket among young people who are involved in the sport and are eager to see the USA win the World Cup. Cricket is spreading beyond its traditional base, with more youngsters taking it seriously each year. The school system in most parts of the country is flexible, allowing youngsters to balance sports and academics effectively."

Regarding infrastructure for the sport in the country, Kumar noted, "Infrastructure is another area where we are seeing significant improvements, especially in major hubs like Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and New Jersey. More academies and facilities are being established. Just last year, Atlanta saw the development of world-class facilities with six grounds, turf pitches, and excellent outfields."

Olympic Aspirations

Kumar also believes that the inclusion of cricket in the LA Olympics will be a significant motivator for many young players. He stated, "Certainly. The steady growth in cricket over the past three to five years can be largely attributed to ICC-accredited leagues like Minor League and Major League Cricket. The T20 World Cup being co-hosted by the USA is a massive catalyst, and the potential inclusion of cricket in the 2028 LA Olympics is a huge inspiration. Many youngsters are dreaming of and working hard to represent the USA in the Olympics in cricket."

Personal Reflections

Reflecting on how cricket has shaped his character and values, Kumar said, "Cricket is not just a sport; it's a virtue that teaches life lessons like failure, success, hard work, and dedication. For me, pursuing cricket has always been about doing what I love and striving for excellence.

"Success in cricket requires overcoming hardships such as early morning training, enduring injuries, and staying focused on representing the USA in the T20 World Cup. These challenges are part of the journey and have taught me invaluable lessons."

Nitish's insights highlight growing enthusiasm for cricket in the USA and its bright future. As the USA Cricket team makes its debut in the T20 World Cup, Nitish and his fellow teammates hope to leave a mark with their performance and inspire a young generation of cricketers who will take up this sport.
