T20 World Cup 2024 Faces Criticism For Poor Pitch Conditions And Scheduling
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has voiced strong criticism towards the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the substandard playing conditions in New York and the poorly timed scheduling of matches in Florida, known for its rain during this period. Latif took to his X account (formerly Twitter) to express his concerns, highlighting the significant issues faced during the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Latif's primary grievance centered around the quality of pitches in New York, where he noted that the highest total was Canada's 137-7, and India's 111-3 was the best run chase.

"After eight matches in New York where the playing surfaces were subpar...we are now facing the possibility of three more washouts in Lauderhill, Florida. This is not a good look for the T20 World Cup, for which teams have trained and practiced for years!" Latif posted.
In a subsequent tweet, he further criticized the ICC's decision-making, stating, "How can the T20 World Cup organizers ignore the rain trends in Lauderhill during this period and schedule matches from June 14-16?"
Adding to the criticism, former Pakistan captain Azhar Ali has also called on the ICC to reconsider the venue choice for the matches in Florida. In an interview with a local news channel, Azhar emphasized the necessity of relocating the matches due to severe flood warnings in the state. He pointed out that the current circumstances make it highly improbable for the scheduled matches to proceed as planned.
"Given the severe conditions in Florida, it seems unlikely that the matches will take place. The ICC must take action and shift the games to another venue," Azhar asserted. He suggested that even if it meant holding two matches at a single venue, it would be a better alternative. "I'm confident the teams involved have already contacted the ICC, requesting a venue change," he added.
Azhar also addressed the ongoing criticism regarding the quality of pitches at New York's Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, urging the ICC to take swift action. "The ICC needs to act quickly, and logistically, it shouldn't be too challenging. If no matches occur in Florida, the ICC will face even more scrutiny, especially given the ongoing concerns about pitch quality in New York," he concluded.
Pakistan crashed out of the T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday after the USA vs Ireland match in Florida was abandoned due to rain. Pakistan were hoping for Ireland to beat USA to keep their Super 8 hopes alive.
However, USA qualified after getting a point following the abandoned game. Pakistan will now fail to qualify even if they beat Ireland in their last Group A match at the same venue on Sunday.
