T20 World Cup 2024: Past Champions At Risk Of Missing Super 8

As the T20 World Cup 2024 unfolds, three former champions face the risk of an early exit. The tournament, hosted in the USA and the West Indies, features 20 teams divided into four groups, all vying for a spot in the Super 8 stage.

Pakistan, champions in 2009, secured their first victory by defeating Canada on Tuesday. This win elevated them to fourth place in Group A. However, their progression depends on other results. India and the USA have each won their first two matches and are favourites to advance.

Past Champions May Miss Super 8

Pakistan must win their final group match against Ireland and hope for a favourable outcome in the India vs USA match on Wednesday. India will play Canada on Saturday, while the USA will face Ireland on June 14. Pakistan also needs a significant win over Ireland on June 16 to improve their Net Run Rate (NRR).

Defending champions England are currently fourth in Group B. They shared points with Scotland due to a rain-affected match and lost to Australia. With one point from two matches, England's path to the Super 8 is challenging.

Australia has already secured a spot in the Super 8 with three wins. Scotland is second with five points from three matches, while Namibia sits third with two points from two games. England must win against Oman and Namibia to reach five points and hope for Australia to defeat Scotland by a large margin to surpass Scotland's NRR (+2.164). England's current NRR is -1.800.

Group D: Sri Lanka's Slim Chances

Sri Lanka's hopes of advancing are slim after losing two of their first three matches and having one game against Nepal abandoned due to rain. The 2014 champions are at the bottom of Group D with one point from three games.

South Africa has already qualified from this group. Bangladesh and Netherlands, each with two points from two matches, are competing for the second spot in the Super 8. Bangladesh will play Netherlands on June 13 and Nepal on June 17, while Netherlands will face Sri Lanka in their final game on June 17.

The T20 World Cup 2024 continues to deliver intense competition as teams battle for a place in the Super 8 stage. The upcoming matches will be crucial in determining which former champions can keep their hopes alive.
