Suryakumar Yadav To Lead Team India In T20I Series Against Sri Lanka
Suryakumar Yadav is thrilled to take on the new role of captain for Team India's T20I squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. He expressed that this position brings a lot of "responsibility, excitement and enthusiasm".
India has appointed Suryakumar as the T20I skipper for the Sri Lanka series, with Shubman Gill as his deputy. The series is set to begin on July 27.

This tour marks a fresh chapter as it will be India's first international assignment under new coach Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir took over earlier this month after Rahul Dravid vacated the position.
Following much speculation about Rohit Sharma's successor, selectors chose Suryakumar over Hardik Pandya, who was vice-captain during India's T20 World Cup win last month.
A day after his appointment, Suryakumar thanked fans and well-wishers on social media. He described the recent weeks as "nothing short of a dream".
"Thank you so much for outpouring love, support and best wishes from you. The last few weeks have been nothing short of a dream and I am truly grateful. Playing for the country is the most special feeling that I will never be able to describe in words," Suryakumar posted on Instagram.
Suryakumar debuted internationally in 2021 at age 30 and has since become one of India's top T20I stars. His consistency, fast run flow, and unorthodox shots have set him apart.
In 68 T20I matches, he has amassed 2340 runs with an average of 43.33 and a strike rate of 167.74. His record includes four centuries and 19 fifties, with a highest score of 117.
Ranked second in T20I batting, Suryakumar was part of India's 2024 T20 World Cup-winning team. He scored 199 runs in eight innings at an average of 28.42 and a strike rate above 135, including two half-centuries.
Key Performances and Leadership Experience
The Mumbai batter has delivered crucial performances in high-pressure situations. Notably, he took a match-sealing catch of David Miller in the final stages of an intense game to secure India's seven-run victory in June.
In three T20 World Cups, Suryakumar has scored 480 runs in 17 matches at an average of 40.00, with five half-centuries and a strike rate above 158. His dominance earned him the captaincy role by late 2023.
During his interim captaincy, Suryakumar led India in seven T20Is against Australia and South Africa, winning five matches and losing two. Now he steps into the role following Rohit Sharma's retirement from the format until at least the next T20 World Cup in 2026.
Suryakumar Yadav's journey from debutant to captain reflects his remarkable talent and leadership qualities. As he prepares to lead India against Sri Lanka, fans eagerly anticipate his continued success on the international stage.
