Suryakumar Yadav Aims For Leadership As Riyan Parag Revels In Bowling Success
India's captain, Suryakumar Yadav, prefers to see himself as a leader rather than just a captain. This sentiment came after he led the team to a 44-run win against Sri Lanka in the first T20I of their three-match series at Pallekele International Stadium on July 27.
In the ninth over, Yadav brought Arshdeep Singh back into the attack. The young left-armer delivered by dismissing Mendis, ending the opening partnership at 84 runs. Despite this breakthrough, Sri Lanka continued their aggressive play.

With only five specialist bowlers available, Suryakumar made crucial changes that turned the game in India's favour. He reintroduced Axar Patel in the 15th over, who then removed Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka, halting Sri Lanka's momentum.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan praised Suryakumar's captaincy skills. However, Suryakumar expressed his desire to be more than just a captain. "I... I don't want to be a captain; I want to be a leader. That's it," he said in a video posted by BCCI on X.

Suryakumar's decision to hand the ball to Riyan Parag was one of the game's highlights. Parag, who had not performed well with the bat, excelled with the ball on the spinning track. He took three wickets while conceding only five runs in his 1.2 overs.
"This Riyan Parag can be special because I have seen him bowl in the IPL as well as in the nets," Suryakumar said. "And I also said on the PC that he has an X-factor."
Parag bowled Kamindu Mendis in his first over and then dismissed Maheesh Theekshana and Dilshan Madushanka consecutively. Reflecting on his performance, Parag shared his enthusiasm for bowling and his discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir about strategy.
Preparation and Communication
"I love bowling. I bowl as much as I can behind the scenes," Parag revealed. He mentioned extensive communication during practice sessions about where and how to bowl effectively under different conditions.
"There was actual preparation done with Gautam sir," Parag added. "If you bowl on the 16th or 17th over, if the wicket is offering spin, where do you bowl."
The Indian team will look to secure the series victory in the second T20I at Pallekele on July 28 after their initial win.
