Suryakumar Yadav's Leadership As India T20I Captain Celebrated For Its Merit
Suryakumar Yadav, known for his aggressive batting, has been named India's new T20I captain. This decision places him ahead of Hardik Pandya, who was widely expected to succeed Rohit Sharma.
Hardik, who served as vice-captain during India's T20 World Cup victory, was a strong contender for the captaincy. However, Suryakumar's consistent performances and leadership qualities tipped the scales in his favour.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aims to have Suryakumar lead the team in the 2026 T20 World Cup. This decision has sparked discussions among cricket enthusiasts and on social media. Many believe that Gautam Gambhir, Suryakumar's former mentor and now the Indian team's coach, played a significant role in this appointment.
Gambhir's history with Suryakumar dates back to their time at Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Under Gambhir's captaincy at KKR, Suryakumar found his footing and showcased his potential. Gambhir's belief in him was evident as Surya thrived under his guidance.
In an interview with myKhel, Ashok Aswalkar, Suryakumar's childhood coach, praised his leadership skills. "Surya is a natural leader. He might be Gambhir's favourite, but he will get the leadership role on his own," Aswalkar stated.
Aswalkar highlighted that Surya's early career struggles taught him resilience. "Due to early setbacks and struggles in his career, Surya learnt that nothing will come easily to him," he said. These experiences shaped him into a player who excels under pressure and adapts to different conditions.
Aswalkar further emphasised that Suryakumar’s leadership abilities were evident from a young age. "He understands what it takes to be a leader and has shown that time and again," he remarked.
While acknowledging Gambhir's influence, Aswalkar stressed that Suryakumar’s rise is due to his own merits. "I see him as the future India captain. Surya will achieve it on his own strength," he added.
"Of course, someone like Gambhir as the coach will help him but he has already led India in a couple of T20I series and shown his capabilities," Aswalkar continued. He noted that Surya’s knack for captaincy was evident even during his Under-14, U-16, and U-19 days.
Although many did not expect Surya to become India's skipper so soon, Aswalkar believes that the partnership between Suryakumar and Gambhir will benefit Indian cricket significantly.
This move by BCCI reflects their vision for the future of Indian cricket. With Suryakumar at the helm and Gambhir as coach, there is optimism about elevating Indian cricket to new heights.
