Stokes Backs Buttler To Lead England's White-Ball Team Despite World Cup Exit
England Test captain Ben Stokes has expressed his support for Jos Buttler to continue as the skipper of the country's limited-overs teams, despite their T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to India. England's campaign ended with a 68-run loss in Guyana, where they were bowled out for just 103 runs.
Buttler's team had a tumultuous tournament, needing Australia to beat Scotland to avoid an early exit before advancing as runners-up in the Super-8s. Buttler has committed to conducting a thorough review following this second consecutive World Cup disappointment, after losing the ODI title in India last year.

Despite mounting pressure on Buttler, Stokes believes he is still the right person to lead England forward. "Jos is the man to lead that white-ball team forward," Stokes told BBC Sport. "He is a great leader. He's got the respect of all the team members in the dressing room."
Stokes highlighted that reaching another major semi-final is an achievement in itself. "They have done a great job in getting to another major semi-final. Being part of sport is about growing and progressing your side. It's not shabby to say you got through to a World Cup semi-final," he added.
Stokes, who chose not to participate in the T20 World Cup after playing in the 50-over tournament in 2023, compared the scrutiny faced by Buttler's team to that experienced by England's footballers. The Three Lions were criticised for their performances at Euro 2024 despite topping their group with the best defensive record.
"Unfortunately, it's the way the English mentality is—they have got through and they are getting a load of grief," Stokes said regarding Gareth Southgate's team. "I know what it's like. I guess that comes from expectation and everyone wanting their team to do well."
Buttler acknowledged that England couldn't perform at their best during the crucial match against India. Reflecting on their defeat and overall campaign, he promised an in-depth review would follow as they look ahead.

The pressure on sportspeople in England is unique, according to Stokes. He noted that high expectations often lead to intense scrutiny when teams fall short of success.
The upcoming review will be crucial for England as they aim to address shortcomings and build towards future tournaments under Buttler's leadership.
