Sri Lanka Cricket Board Denies Drinking Party Allegations At T20 World Cup

The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has issued a strong rebuttal to serious accusations made against their players during the T20 World Cup 2024.

A Sri Lankan media outlet reported that the players indulged in a drinking party before their World Cup opener against South Africa. The report claimed that the team was heavily intoxicated at their hotel before the match, which they lost by six wickets to the Proteas.

SLC Denies World Cup Party Claims

Sri Lanka's performance in the tournament was disappointing, as they were eliminated in the group stages. They secured only one win in their group, which was against the Netherlands.

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has firmly denied these allegations and released a statement asserting that no such incident occurred. "SLC categorically and strongly refutes the contents of the article and confirms that no such incidents, as described, have occurred. Therefore, SLC states unequivocally that the news report is entirely false, fabricated, and baseless," read an official statement from SLC.

"We vehemently believe that such false reporting unfairly damages the reputation of Sri Lanka Cricket, its officials, and the players," it added.

Public Reaction and Coaching Changes

The public in Sri Lanka was already displeased with the team's performance, and these allegations further heightened their discontent. Following their poor showing in the World Cup, head coach Chris Silverwood resigned from his position. The SLC has appointed former player Sanath Jayasuriya as interim coach until September.

The governing body of Sri Lanka Cricket has also requested that the newspaper responsible for publishing these claims issue a 'Right of Reply' to correct their published content. This move aims to address and rectify any misinformation spread by the initial report.

These developments have stirred significant reactions among cricket fans in Sri Lanka, reflecting both disappointment over performance and concern over reputational damage due to unverified reports.
