Sunrisers Hyderabad Shatters Record For Most Sixes In IPL 2024 Season

In a stunning display of power-hitting, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) set a new benchmark for the most sixes by a team in a single Indian Premier League (IPL) season. This achievement came after their emphatic 10-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. The SRH openers, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, played pivotal roles in this historic feat, contributing 7 and 5 maximums respectively. Their efforts propelled the team's sixes tally to an impressive 141 for the season.

Abhishek Sharma, with his unbeaten 75 off 28 balls, not only led his team to victory but also topped the chart for individual sixes this season with 34. Alongside Head, who scored an unbeaten 89 off 30 balls, they chased down the target of 167 in just 9.4 overs. Meanwhile, LSG's innings earlier in the day saw them struggling to build momentum, managing to add only four sixes to their total, with contributions from Krunal Pandya, KL Rahul, and Nicholas Pooran.

SRH Sets IPL Sixes Record

The current season has been remarkable for hitting over 1000 sixes in just 56 matches, hinting at a potential new record for total sixes in an IPL season. The previous record was set at 1124 sixes during a 74-game season last year. SRH now leads the chart for the most sixes in a single IPL season with 146 sixes, surpassing Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and Mumbai Indians (MI) in the process.

Most Sixes by a Team in IPL History

Despite their recent success, SRH still has some ground to cover to catch up with the legacy teams in terms of overall maximums hit by a team in IPL history. Mumbai Indians lead this prestigious list with a staggering 1664 sixes, followed closely by Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Other teams like Punjab Kings, Chennai Super Kings, and Kolkata Knight Riders have also surpassed the 1400-sixes mark. Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals are not far behind, with Sunrisers Hyderabad crossing the 1000-sixes milestone after their latest match against LSG.

The newcomers to the league, Gujarat Titans and LSG, are gradually building their tally but have yet to cross significant milestones like their counterparts. As of now, LSG has added more than 300 sixes to their name in their brief IPL stint.

This season has been particularly notable for the sheer volume of sixes hit across all matches. Teams like Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders have made significant contributions to this tally alongside SRH. The ongoing competition not only showcases the evolving dynamics of T20 cricket but also highlights the increasing prowess of batsmen in leveraging every opportunity to score big.

As we move forward in IPL 2024, it will be interesting to see if any other records are set or broken. With more than 15 matches left in this edition, fans can anticipate more thrilling performances and possibly even more sixes as teams vie for supremacy in one of cricket's most exciting leagues.
