South Africa Aims For Series Whitewash Against Sri Lanka In Second Test Match

South Africa is on the brink of a series sweep against Sri Lanka in the second Test at Gqeberha. The Proteas need just five more wickets to secure a 2-0 victory, while Sri Lanka requires 143 runs to even the series at St George's Oval.

On Sunday, December 8, South Africa resumed their innings at 191-3. Temba Bavuma, scoring 66, and Tristan Stubbs with 47, continued their solid performance at the crease.

David Bedingham contributed 35 runs, helping South Africa reach a second-innings total of 317. Prabath Jayasuriya's impressive five-wicket haul was the only significant obstacle for them.

Sri Lanka faced a daunting target of 348 runs. South Africa capitalised on the new ball, dismissing Dimuth Karunaratne for 1, Pathum Nissanka for 18, and Dinesh Chandimal for 29.

Despite losing Angelo Matthews for 32 and Kamindu Mendis for 35, an unbroken partnership between Dhananjaya de Silva and Kusal Mendis added 83 runs. This stand gave Sri Lanka hope of achieving an extraordinary comeback.

Jayasuriya's Milestone

Bavuma once again set an example for South Africa with his fourth consecutive score of over fifty. Jayasuriya's five-wicket haul marked his tenth in just 18 Tests and his first outside Sri Lanka.

The tourists still have a chance to make history by levelling the contest. No team has ever chased more than 271 runs successfully at St George's Oval before.
