South Africa Establishes Strong Lead Over Sri Lanka On Day Three Of 2nd Test Match

South Africa concluded day three of the second Test against Sri Lanka with a 221-run advantage. Temba Bavuma and Tristan Stubbs played pivotal roles in strengthening the hosts' position.

Sri Lanka began the day at 242-3 but quickly lost their remaining six wickets for just 67 runs. This collapse allowed South Africa to secure a narrow 30-run lead from the first innings.

Marco Jansen was instrumental, dismissing Angelo Matthews (44) and Kamindu Mendis (48) in quick succession. Dane Paterson then dismantled Sri Lanka's tail, adding four more wickets to his tally after removing Dinesh Chandimal on Friday. His efforts included three wickets in an impressive 89th over, marking his first five-for in Test cricket.

Tony de Zorzi contributed a solid 55-run opening partnership for South Africa before spinner Prabath Jayasuriya bowled him with a full delivery. Aiden Markram also scored 55 but was caught spectacularly by Kusal Mendis, diving to make a one-handed catch. Ryan Rickelton added 24 runs before South Africa found themselves at 109-3.

Bavuma and Stubbs then steadied the innings with an unbroken partnership of 84 runs, guiding South Africa to stumps without further loss. They will resume at 191-3 on Sunday, aware that no team has ever successfully chased more than 271 runs at St George's Oval.

The duo's composed batting ensured South Africa ended the day in a strong position despite being precariously placed earlier at 109-3. Bavuma is nearing his fourth consecutive half-century of the series, while Stubbs aims to replicate his career-best score of 122 from the first Test's second innings.

Their partnership has been crucial in maintaining South Africa's dominance as they head into day four. If Stubbs can deliver another significant performance, it could put the match beyond Sri Lanka's reach.
