T20 World Cup Final: South Africa's Defeat 'Hurts', Markram Lauds Team Effort

South Africa's captain, Aidan Markram, expressed pride in his team despite their T20 World Cup final loss to India. The Proteas needed 30 runs from 30 balls to win in Barbados on Saturday. However, they fell short by seven runs as India clinched the title for the first time since 2007.

India's victory marked them as only the third team to win the T20 World Cup more than once, joining West Indies and England. The match was a nail-biter, with South Africa coming close but ultimately falling short.

SA's T20 Final Loss: Markram Proud

The defeat was painful for South Africa, who were playing in their first T20 World Cup semi-final. Despite the loss, Markram emphasized the team's strong performance throughout the tournament.

"I think it'll take some time for us to have a really good reflection on a really good campaign that we've had," Markram said. "Obviously for the time being, it hurts quite a bit, but having said that, still incredibly proud of this group of players and everyone that's involved in this team."

He continued to praise his team: "A really good game of cricket, so on all fronts, really chuffed with the guys today. Not great to [not] get over the line, but incredibly proud of this group of people that we've got going here in our white-ball squad."

Close Yet Far

The Proteas were in a strong position to win but couldn't capitalize. "We got into a great position, which proves that we were worthy finalists and could have won the game today," Markram noted. "Unfortunately didn't, but still incredibly proud of the group."

The manner of defeat stung for South Africa, yet Markram refused to be too downbeat about their overall performance.
