Why South Africa Hasn't Qualified For T20 World Cup 2024 Semi-Finals Despite Wins

South Africa secured a narrow 7-run victory over England in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 match at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia on Friday, June 21.

Quinton de Kock (65 off 38 balls) and David Miller (43 off 28 balls) powered South Africa to a total of 163/6 in their allotted 20 overs. The final three overs bowled by Kagiso Rabada (2 for 32), Marco Jansen (0 for 31), and Anrich Nortje (1 for 35) restricted England to 156/6.

SA's Uncertain Semi-Final Spot

This win marked South Africa's second consecutive victory in the Super 8 stages. The Proteas had previously defeated the USA by 18 runs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua & Barbuda on Tuesday, June 18.

Despite these victories, South Africa has not yet secured a spot in the semi-finals. They currently top the Super 8 Group 2 points table but do not have the (Q) next to their name.

According to ICC playing conditions, the top two teams from each group in the Super 8 will progress to the semi-finals, scheduled for Thursday, June 27. The first semi-final will take place in Tarouba, Trinidad, while the second will be held in Guyana.

Progression Criteria for Teams

If teams finish with equal points in their group, progression to the semi-finals will be determined by:

  1. The team with the greatest number of wins in its group will be placed higher.
  2. If teams have equal points and wins, the team with the higher net run rate (NRR) will be placed higher.
  3. If still equal, head-to-head results between the teams will be considered.
  4. If unresolved, teams will be ordered as per their position on the ICC Men's T20I Rankings as of May 31, 2024.

South Africa currently leads the table and will secure a semi-final spot if England loses to USA or fails to significantly improve their NRR. South Africa's NRR is +0.625, while England's is +0.412.

If South Africa loses to West Indies, who have a superior NRR of +1.814, they must avoid a heavy defeat. A significant loss could bring England back into contention if they beat USA.
