South Africa Secures Spot In T20 World Cup Final With Victory Over Afghanistan
South Africa has advanced to the T20 World Cup final for the first time by defeating Afghanistan by nine wickets in Trinidad. The Proteas had previously faced heartbreak in their two earlier semi-final appearances, but this year, Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada led them to victory by dismantling Afghanistan's top order.
Afghanistan entered the semi-finals with the best bowling strike rate of any team at the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, it was South Africa who excelled with the ball, setting up an easy win. Afghanistan was bowled out for their lowest ever total in T20Is, managing just 56 runs in 11.5 overs. Jansen finished with figures of 3-16, while Rabada took 2-14.

The World Cup's leading run-scorer Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed for a duck just six balls into the game. He edged Jansen's delivery to Reeza Hendricks, leaving Afghanistan at 28-6 before the end of the seventh over. No Afghan player scored more than Azmatullah Omarzai's 10 runs, with spinner Tabraiz Shamsi finishing off the tail with figures of 3-6.
Despite Quinton de Kock being bowled out for five runs by Fazalhaq Farooqi, South Africa's chase was never in doubt. Farooqi took his 17th wicket of the tournament, setting a new record for most wickets in a single edition. However, Reeza Hendricks (29) and captain Aiden Markram (23) guided South Africa to victory within 8.5 overs.
South Africa will now face either India or England in Saturday's final. They have already defeated England once in this tournament. The Proteas' bowlers combined efficiency with destruction to achieve this historic milestone.
"FINAL BOUND | #SAvAFG The dream continues, South Africa! For the first time in history, the Proteas are through to the ICC T20 World Cup Final. See you in Barbados!" tweeted Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA).
