Maharaj Leads South Africa To Strong Position With Patience Against West Indies

South Africa's Keshav Maharaj remains hopeful that their persistence will pay off after a tough third day against the West Indies. The Windies endured 117.4 overs in the field, eventually wrapping up South Africa's first innings just 20 minutes into the opening session as Kagiso Rabada was dismissed for 21, followed by Lungi Ngidi's four-ball duck.

Reflecting on his performance at stumps, Maharaj said, "When the ball goes in the outfield, it becomes a bit soft and doesn't react much. We have been trying to keep it as dry as possible. There is not much off the wicket. I have been trying to use different paces and various trajectories but only the odd ball is reacting."

SA's Patience Edges West Indies

Rabada and Ngidi then tested Mikyle Louis and Kraigg Braithwaite with the new ball, but the Windies openers reached an unbeaten half-century stand without much difficulty. The Proteas introduced Maharaj's spin as early as the 13th over, which paid off when he bowled Louis for 35 with the last ball before lunch.

Rain caused a lengthy delay, but it worked in South Africa's favour. Wiaan Mulder ran out Braithwaite on 35, and Maharaj dismissed Keacy Carty for 42 and Alick Athanaze for just three. Maharaj bowled 28 consecutive overs throughout a tough day and hopes South Africa can capitalise with the West Indies on 145-5, trailing by 212 runs.

"But when you bowl in the right channel for a long time in Test cricket, it does pay dividends," Maharaj added. His efforts were crucial in keeping South Africa in a strong position going into Day 4.

Kavem Hodge and Jason Holder will aim to provide further resistance when play resumes on Saturday in Port of Spain.
