Nortje Leads South Africa To Commanding Win Over Sri Lanka In World Cup

South Africa's World Cup campaign began on a high note with a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka on Monday, thanks to an outstanding bowling performance. Sri Lanka, opting to bat first, struggled against South Africa's disciplined bowlers. They managed only 40-5 in the first 10 overs, with Keshav Maharaj taking two wickets in his second over, dismissing Wanindu Hasaranga and Sadeera Samarawickrama for ducks.

Anrich Nortje further dismantled Sri Lanka's batting lineup, securing figures of 4-7 in his four overs. This effort ensured Sri Lanka were bowled out for their lowest-ever T20I total of 78. Quinton de Kock was the top scorer for South Africa with 20 runs off 27 balls. Despite a strong bowling effort from Sri Lanka, particularly Hasaranga's 2-17, South Africa reached 80-4 in the 17th over to seal the win.

In another Group B match, Namibia narrowly defeated Oman in a super over on Sunday. David Wiese played a crucial role with both bat and ball. He recorded figures of 3-28 as Oman were bowled out for 109. Namibia also struggled, ending their innings at 109-6 after scrambling two runs off the final ball.

In the first T20 World Cup super over since 2012, Wiese hit a four and a six off the first two balls, scoring 13 off four deliveries. He then took the ball and dismissed Naseem Khushi, leading Namibia to an 11-run victory.

Anrich Nortje's career-best performance was pivotal in restricting Sri Lanka to their lowest score in men's T20Is. His figures of 4-7 surpassed his previous best of 4-10 against Bangladesh in 2022. Additionally, Ottneil Baartman made history by becoming the first South African to take a World Cup wicket with his first tournament delivery.
